Corrine Day has possibly become one of my favourite fashion photographers over night, I've chosen one of her photo's for my new brief. It's from a VOGUE spread in 2002 she did, it's a very slender blond model wearing an Emanuel Ungaro couture dress. It's one of the most beautiful photographs I personally have ever seen, I'm not sure whether it's the contrasts between the dress, the girl's figure and the rough surroundings or whether it's just the tones I find so captivating. I find it really romantic to look at.
The dress looks like its been torn to shreds, but in a tragic way, like love has been lost instead of in a brutal bodily harming way, it's almost like the picture is telling a story about the relationship between the girl in the dress and what the dress has lead too - which is basically her back turned against the rest of the world. That could just be my inner romantic and over active imagination talking though! I find it so moving and delicate to look at, it genuinely is something beautiful.
ANYWAY! Moving swiftly on before I get carried away with my emotions, after choosing this very photograph I decided it made sense to not only look into the designer who is the fabulous Emanuel Ungaro, but also the photographer herself, anyone who can produce work as stunning as this deserves a few moments of your day in my opinion. And I have to say, after looking her up, she has not surprisingly become a real interest of mine. Her work is really dynamic and fresh to look at. Her muse has to have been Kate Moss for a considerable amount of time during her career though as some of Moss's most famous prints seem to have been shot by Day.
Unfortunately, while researching I learnt that Corrine Day died in 2010 after battling a really tragic case of brain cancer. Safe to say though, while on the planet her talents were definitely not wasted and I shall appreciate them for probably the rest of my life, and intend to use her as inspiration threw my entire career. I'm quite a geek, in a chic way of course, but never the less a geek in general, I really adore looking at fashion photography and the masters behind it because I envy their talents more than anything, how anyone can take such beautiful snap-shots of a moment or of a place and people really fascinates me, probably because behind a camera I am terrible! I don't even take the photographs on a night out because I don't want to be the one to blame when there is no evidence to go with our memories, just pictures of empty glasses and most likely our feet!
That's something I really admire about Corrine Day's pictures though, my favourites of hers are all so fun and quite cheeky, yes as always you need quite an open mind with some more than others but then it's my blog you're reading so if you don't have an open mind already you certainly will once you've read a few posts of mine! You certainly can't be naive when it comes to fashion I think anyway.
I've left a few pieces of Corrine Day's work that I personally liked the most, there are small little explanations to the sides of them for you. It would be nice to think that you'll look at this post and perhaps do a little research of your own on the late Ms.Day or at least look at fashion photography in a different way. It's quite often a very romantic subject, and that's something people seem to forget in this day and age, is that romance isn't always about champagne and flowers, sometimes it really can be as simple and as unexpected as a photograph.
This photo is another with the beautiful Kate Moss, what I love about it is the Androgynous feel it gives, she's so beautiful and yet her harshly angular figure and manly outfit gives her this unflattering edge that shouldn't work but it really does! (I mean WHO would wear such big nickers if you were planning on showing them off...)
This photograph made me giggle, it reminded me of when I posted 'S.E.X' if any of you can remember?! It recieved a fair amount of attention anyway. This one isn't quite a provocative as those spreads were but still has a sexual meaning to it, her body language, the setting, clothing etc all indicates sex, however when you look at her facial expression, I couldn't help but smile because you really shouldn't be laughing in such a nonchalant way if you were in that position really should you!

This one is just lovely, I love the colour tones, Kate's face, the body language. Everything. It just works for me. I always think of my own youth when I see this photo as well, Kate Moss was a massive part of my young teen years, everything about her I wanted to be and this was one of the first pictures I saw of hers. She's fresh looking, slim and has attitude in the way she's holding herself. The confidence she clearly has, even though she was critisized for looking unusual and against the ordinary really inspires me. She is everything I've always wanted in myself basically. (Plus, she's got slightly nicer nickers on in this picture!)
It's a good Day all round really.
